Both CAER’s vision and mission are derived from KY ACTS 90 Ch 325:
To execute a research program designed to develop new and more effective and environmentally acceptable use for coal and to improve existing uses for Kentucky’s fossil fuels and other natural resources.

OUR VISION
Focused on Kentucky’s
Energy Issues
Energy Issues
At the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research, we aim to excel as an applied research and development center with an international reputation, focusing on the optimal use of Kentucky’s and the nation’s energy resources for the benefit of its people.
Our Mission is to
- Perform sound fundamental and applied research to develop industrially relevant technologies for energy production, efficiency, and environmental protection.
- Promote UK’s objective of developing and benefiting from its Intellectual Property and for assuring its widest possible use and adoption by Kentucky’s citizens and industries.
- Contribute to the teaching and instruction aim of UK and labor force development by teaching, training, and providing experiential education for students at all levels, pre-college to post-graduate.
- Provide public service in areas of scientific education and our energy-related competencies, and by contributing to the formulation of technically sound public policy related to energy and the environment.
- Develop the capabilities of our colleagues while fostering a mutually supportive work environment with respect for individuals.
- Act in good faith and integrity in all of our dealings to build long lasting relationships with our stakeholders and supporters.

Research for Today
and Tomorrow
and Tomorrow
The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy’s Research has a long tradition of fossil fuel research. While respecting that history, we recognize today’s constantly changing energy field. In order to respond to today and tomorrow’s needs, we strive to solve existing problems, while identifying potential future technologies.

Energy RPA
The Energy Research Prioritization Partnership will enhance the energy research strengths of the university, centered in the Center for Applied Energy Research, through support for a diverse cohort of new faculty and staff working within the energy space. The Partnership will extend UK’s current strengths through targeted, collaborative hires and support of associated faculty and staff. The focus: provide start-up funds in partnership with departments, colleges and centers for 7 or 8 new faculty and staff hires in targeted areas; and support hires through seed grants, inclusion on multi-PI grants, and mentoring with $250,000 matched by departments, colleges, and centers.
Opportunities/Areas for Recruitment
- Devices for energy harvesting and storage
- Advanced materials for energy applications
- Biomass conversion: lignin valorization, mycology
- Energy storage: batteries, flow batteries, supercapacitors
- Energy harvesting: waste heat, photovoltaic, piezoelectric
- Subsurface fluid flow: model and monitor injected fluids
- 3D subsurface/reservoir geostatistical modeling
